Which Countries Are China Allowing Visa-Free Travel?

China is conducting a trial period for visa-free travel, allowing citizens from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia to visit without a visa from December 2023 to November 30th, 2024, as announced by the foreign ministry.

How many Days can you visit China Visa-Free?

During this time, individuals holding ordinary passports from the mentioned countries can engage in business or tourism in China for up to 15 days without a visa. This initiative aims to support the "promotion of China's high-quality development and opening up," as stated by spokeswoman Mao Ning.

It is noteworthy that the majority of travelers typically require a visa for entry into China. Exceptions to this rule include citizens of Singapore and Brunei, who are permitted visa-free entry for business, tourism, family visits, and transit for a maximum duration of 15 days.

"On the left, a hand offers a passport, while on the right, another hand rejects it with a raised palm – illustrating the highs and lows of visa application experiences.

Why did China initially restrict Visa-Free Travel?

The resumption of various visa types in March marked a significant shift, considering that in March 2020, China had implemented stringent travel restrictions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. For three years, China maintained some of the world's strictest COVID-19 measures, involving travel restrictions, lockdowns, and frequent testing. Although impactful on the economy, the zero-COVID policy was lifted in December of the previous year.

Prior to the pandemic, China welcomed tens of millions of international visitors annually, solidifying its position as a popular destination. This move towards visa-free travel for selected countries signifies a step towards revitalizing international tourism in the country.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this trial period of visa-free travel for citizens from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia marks a positive step towards facilitating easier and more accessible travel to China. From December 2023 to November 30, 2024, the initiative demonstrates China's commitment to promoting high-quality development and fostering international connections.
